Developing Women Leaders in Medicine

Leadership Development for Women Physicians

What is Momentum?

Current research strongly suggests that today’s leader succeeds by creating positive and productive relationships, which includes the ability to make strong connections, share a vision, and inspire others toward a common goal. Women physicians can leverage their natural abilities to exercise their leadership skills in a variety of venues, some of which may be in a male-dominated environment.  The gender disparity in health care leadership is pronounced. Globally, it is estimated that women represent 70% of health workers, yet only 26% of representative positions are held by women. Much work can be done to bridge this gender leadership gap.

There is interest in, and a recognized need for, a leadership program for women physicians.

This program is aimed to bridge the known gender leadership gap, providing an opportunity for women in medicine to reflect and examine their current or future leadership roles, and gain crucial skills for success as a leader. This course focuses on deepening self-awareness and self-knowledge, identifying and developing individual skills and strengths, and highlighting capabilities necessary to address and successfully meet challenges unique to women leaders in health care. Each participant will have the insights and tools to create a customized leadership development plan and identify practical first steps.

PEAK MD Inc. offers a two-part program. It is recommended that groups or organizations initially offer the Momentum© workshop to bring together a group of women in medicine, followed by the Raft© to allow them to remain connected and learn together within a local supportive community.

Developing Women Leaders in Medicine:

➡️This is an intensive leadership program which:

  • Duration: Two days duration, ideally delivered in person.
  • Timing: 8 am until 4 pm each day, or as per preference of the host organization.
  • Participants: For 24-40 participants is ideal, to allow for optimal learning with and from the participants.
  • Focus: Focused on leadership knowledge and tangible skills development.
  • Accreditation: Can be accredited by host organization, using learning objectives below.

This two-day workshop, designed for early or mid-career women in medicine, will help strengthen the foundational leadership skills for women physicians by helping them to:

  • Gain insight and self-awareness into their personal leadership potential
  • Identify their personal leadership style
  • Build their confidence, grit, and resilience as a leader, three critical factors that correlate with success for women leaders (McKinsey, 2016).
  • Identify habits they have which helped them succeed to date but may now hold them back, and to gain specific skills in modifying these habits to achieve further success.

This will be done through offering knowledge transfer and concrete strategies and tools, via a combination of didactic teaching and case presentations, rich interaction in small group breakout sessions, and large group discussions.

At the Intersection of Leadership and Wellbeing:

➡️A follow-up year-long accredited online program which offers continued learning, connection, and community, led by a local facilitator.

  • Duration: One year from start.
  • Timing: Two webinars released each week for asynchronous learning; a monthly local in-person session to discuss the month’s learning with a local facilitator.
  • Focus: Further discussion of leadership concepts, with application in real life situations.
  • Accreditation: Accredited by the RCPSC and CFPC for 82 hours of CME.

The Raft© is an online accredited community for women physicians, striving to empower women in healthcare through leadership and wellness training. This supportive community of like-minded women in medicine is dedicated to building and growing leadership capacity, while remaining connected, supported and resilient.

The Raft© offers two weekly webinars that are recorded and accessible asynchronously:

  1. The Leadership Webinars:
    • Using the LEADS framework, there is a 20-minute microburst of knowledge on a leadership topic. In the live webinars, this is followed by a 20-minute small group breakout session, and consolidated in a final 20-minute large group debrief and discussion.
    • During the year, the monthly topics covered include Confidence, Emotional Intelligence, Effective Communication, Leading Teams, Managing Conflict, Leading Change, Negotiation, Strategy and Governance, Financial Literacy, and Advancing Your Career
  1. Special Webinars: These rotate every week through four key aspects:
    1. Conversation with a Master: a fireside chat, an intimate informal discussion featuring an accomplished high-profile Women Leader in Medicine, to learn about their leadership journey and lessons learned.

    2. Leadership Resilience: a webinar which follows PEAK MD’s Resilience Framework, and uses the 5 C’s of Resilience – Control, Commitment, Connections, Calming, Care for self – to learn and reinforce tools and tips for us to remain healthy as a leader and create safe medical workplaces.

    3. Conversation with an Ally: a fireside chat to highlight our male allies in medicine, and address what they have done and can do to encourage others to be deliberately engaged in addressing diversity issues in healthcare and become a catalyst for change while remaining committed to the success of the medical organization.
    4. Journal Club: a review and critical appraisal of a leadership article in the academic and other literature and discuss how this can be best integrated into our lives as women in medicine.

A monthly Master Class will be held locally, to maintain connection and create a community of women in medicine.  A local colleague will be trained to facilitate the discussion, reviewing the learnings from the previous month, and encourage open shared conversations.

The host organization is responsible for:

  • Promotion and registration of the workshop
  • Securing the room and AV equipment for the workshop
  • Printing workbooks provided by PEAKMD Inc for participants’ use, and pens
  • Providing food and drinks for the workshop participants

All costs associated with these responsibilities.
